Reception New Families

16th April 2020
Firstly, welcome to St Nics!
If this is your first experience as a parent at a primary school, it can be pretty nerve wracking at the best of times and being on lockdown isn't going to make it any easier! For those of you who have done this before, this time will be different.
Although we have dates in the diary - a new parents evening, 'stay and play' dates and the Teddy Bear's picnic, who knows whether any of those will be able to go ahead. However, we are going to do everything we can to help you and your children settle in and be ready to start school in September.
Contingency Plans
We have been thinking through how we can support you and your children in transition from nursery school to primary school in these difficult and unusual circumstances. Exactly what we do will depend on how the world changes in the next few weeks and months but our first contingency is to record a video presentation to go through the information we would have shared at the new parents meeting. We will do that soon and post it o this page.
We will put all of the information that we would have given out on the evening here, but we will also post it to you. In order not to overwhelm the local post workers, we will probably send them out over a few weeks.
We will also need set up an e-mail distribution list so we can get information out to you electronically and keep you informed about arrangements for the rest of this term as circumstances change.
What We Need From You
If you wish to take up your offer of a place at St Nics, could you return your acceptance form electronically, by post or by dropping it in to school when you are out for your daily exercise. There will be a box inside the main entrance, though the office is not currently staffed all of the time.
Could you also make sure we have a current e-mail address for you so we can set up that distribution list?
I hope to see you all soon but, in the meantime, stay safe. Take care.

Accepting or Declining Your Place

Please could you let us know whether you wish to accept or decline your offer of a place at St Nics by the end of the day on Thursday 30th April? You can do this in a simple message by e-mail or by returning the form below.
If you do accept your offer of a place, could you complete and return the form as soon as possible. Under the current circumstances, by e-mail is our preferred option - - but you can return a paper copy should you need to. There will be a box for them to be placed into in the main entrance of the school.

From last year

The following information was from previous years. Under the current circumstances we will need to review some of it but I have decided to leave it here for now so you have an idea of how things normally work. Much of it will still be of use.
Parents' Meeting
Below is information that is sent by post or given out at the new parents meetings once you have been offered a place at St Nics.

What to expect, when? A parents’ guide

The purpose of this booklet is to help you as a parent/carer find out more about how your child is learning and developing during their first five years, in relation to the EYFS. Children develop more rapidly during the first five years of their lives than at any other time. This booklet has been written to help you as a parent know what to expect during these vitally important years by focusing on the seven areas of learning and development which are covered in the EYFS.

My Child's First Day At School

Sometimes it is the parents who find the first day more difficult that their children. At St Nics we usually do a parents coffee & tea morning so you can come in to the main hall so you can give each other moral support!
Reception Baseline Assessment
From September 2020 we are required to carry out a baseline assessment for the Government. This will not replace our own baseline assessment which we will use to inform our own teaching.
This video, which is produced by the Department for Education (DfE) explains their baseline assessment.
