A high-quality science education provides the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity, and all pupils should be taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science. Through building up a body of key foundational knowledge and concepts, pupils should be encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They should be encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes.

Science At St Nics

Science has the unique capacity to tap into children’s natural desire to make sense of the world around them. Primary Science can provide the foundation of knowledge and skills that children can use, not only for further education, but throughout their lives. In a world that is constantly changing, it is important that all children are equipped with the skills to thrive through exploration, metacognition, systematic enquiry and high-order thinking. Working scientifically develops these skills, enabling children to become knowledgeable citizens who can make informed decisions about themselves and their environment.  

At St Nicolas Primary School, children are first encouraged to wonder and ask questions about the world around them, in their lessons and in their own time. Through the practice of observation, fair testing, pattern-seeking, classification and researching, children learn how to attempt to answer these questions and continue to dig deeper.  

Children begin their journey in Early Years when they learn through play and exploration linked to the EYFS Understanding the World area of learning. From Key Stage 1 onwards, the students increasingly formalise their scientific ideas and understanding. The National Curriculum divides science learning into topics within the disciplines of Chemistry, Biology and Physics, and Working Scientifically. At St Nicolas Primary School, our science lessons incorporate the five enquiry types to develop the children’s ability to work scientifically. In addition to this, the students are given frequent opportunities to take learning into their own hands through open-ended exploration time. 

At St Nicolas Primary School, we have a rich and varied outdoor space where science comes to life and the students can embrace seeing their classroom learning in context. Outdoor science is extended through Forest School which is delivered daily to groups of children and Year 1 classes.
