History

A high-quality history education will help pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. It should inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past. Teaching should equip pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. History helps pupils to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.

Here at St Nicolas we strive to create and inspire future historians by planning interesting, creative and detailed lessons that teach children the skills they'll need to investigate and interpret the past.

From Reception to Year 6 children are fully immersed through engaging lessons, school trips, pictures and sources from that time to spark their imagination and encourage some of the key historical skills they’ll need. The teaching of history will be taught within cross curricular subjects allowing children to develop a deeper understanding.

Beginning in Reception children begin by exploring their own chronology, focusing on key statements 'Before school I could do this, now I can do …' and 'When I was little.' This is then built upon in KS1 and KS2 when children develop their knowledge and understanding of past events, people and changes in relation to their own life and that of a significant person.  Through Historical enquiry children begin to think critically and reflect on how and why things happen. As they move through the years children are encouraged to give their own interpretation of events through time and give their own argument and reason for why things happened.  By allowing them to have their own opinion they are encouraged to constantly think critically, reflect, debate and to evaluate the past. To support children' understanding of historical vocabulary and key facts they will be introduced to a topic specific knowledge mat that they will be able to refer back to. This enables equal access to each new topic for all topic. 

History is either taught as a block of lessons over a week or two or throughout a half term and the year. Our children will be able to achieve confidence and enjoyment in History and will gradually improve and master essential skills developing a broad base of knowledge and understanding by the time they reach the end of Key Stage 2.
